I think pain and the management of pain is a constant struggle for therapist to deal with when treating clients.
As a therapist you want to help your client by relieving their painful symptoms without inflicting too much pain in the process. The problem being as Tom explains is peoples perception of pain, everyone perceives pain differently and at different degrees, one person's pain can be another person's pleasure. There is always a fine line between acceptable levels of pain and the being able to provide an effective treatment to the client. I find once clients have experience the benefits of their first treatment their perception of pain changes in their follow up sessions. Here is Tom explaining why we feel pain and why we have to go through this discomfort to feel the benefits.
